Collaborative Mission
In the Spring of 2008, the Tompkins County Department of Health issued a health alert regarding an increased number of syphilis cases in the area. Staff from several local colleges, universities, and local agencies banded together to develop an action plan, including the development of this website and related print materials. The campaign slogan, "Never underestimate the value of Peace of Mind" encourages individuals to consider their risk factors, use protection, and get tested for STDs as needed.
Representatives from the Tompkins County Health Department, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Fingerlakes, Ithaca College, TC3 and Cornell University continue to meet regularly to broaden the campaign and communicate about STDs, safer sex campaigns and related health information. It is a unique collaboration between campus and community constituents providing an environmental approach to reducing the spread of sexually transmissible diseases in Tompkins County.
